Throughout my 4 years in eComm, I have gained more knowledge and experience than I ever could've ever imagined. When I first entered the program, I had no clue what I was getting myself into and was worried I wouldn't be able to keep up with what was expected of me. However, with hard work and perseverance and an amazing role model (Mr. Cooper), I was able to exceed all expectations I had for myself.
Not only have I learned how to use different programs such as Premiere, Final Cut, and Rundown Creator, but I have gained many life skills as well. I've been able to communicate with my peers, teachers, and professionals as well as collaborating on stories with my fellow students. Being one of the few seniors in Convergence Journalism, I have had to become a leader for the juniors and step up in different instances such as anchoring and taking on stories. Along with this, my project management has improved with the Raven Minutes becoming more and more common. All of these skills together can help me in my future endeavors by giving me experience in the broadcast field and knowing how to handle mentors and talk to professionals.
This year has really brought out my strengths and weaknesses both technologically and personally. I learned that while I still have errors, I have become a better writer with stories and with scripts. I also have been able to improve on my anchoring skills and being able to meet a deadline for stories and scripts. I do need to improve on my ability to create a story through video rather than just throwing clips together and putting a sound byte behind it.
I can tell from the trips we have taken this year, that the information I have obtained from Convergence will carry me far in college and in my professional career. I hope to take my knowledge of equipment, the broadcast field, anchoring, script writing, etc. down to Arkansas with me next year so I can get a head start on finding possible job shadows and mentors.
I would not change anything in this class, it has taught me more than I ever could've imagined and I am so lucky to have spent the past four years in this program.

Olathe Northwest State Champion Volleyball Season Recap
Being in the video strand as well, I think the story was done really well. I liked how there were many different interviews consisting of players who range from sophomores to seniors. It would've been interesting if the story had a specific view and zoned in on a certain player to get their personal story rather than just the championship game itself. This also would've helped to get more broll for the story. Overall, however, I think this package told the story of the ONW Volleyball team very well and deserved the pixel it received.

I thought this animation looked really cool and took on the true image of a viking. I think it would've been nice if they got a different view rather than keeping the focal point in the same spot just so you can see the bottom of the animation better. Personally, I think this animation was better than the 1st and 2nd place winners because it gave different views unlike the 1st place winner and was more detailed than the 2nd place winner.

I loved how they implemented different aspects of his life into different parts of the website. The website definitely achieves its purpose of effectively giving an overview in to Mark Olson's life. This brand was done very well. I loved the idea of the lime being integrated in green while also having the bright pink to contrast it and tie in the "sweet" aspect of the brand name. I like the second logo more than the one chosen because it looks more fluid and the balance of the lime with the words is very appealing to the eye. I love the bright pink and soft green that were chosen though and how the focal point of the logo is different than the background because it makes it stand out more. Overall, this brand is very appealing to the eye and I'm a huge fan of it.

Sports Reflection Blog
This semester, I've learned a lot of new things and life lessons from the experiences I've had. I think my strengths would definitely be producing, but I also can create good stories when the time is needed. I conduct really good interviews; set up wise and question wise. I also can come up with really interesting shots if I have the time to plan them out. But as a producer I thrive by writing scripts and and making sure everyone's stories are done on time with their lead in's written.
My weaknesses differ from videography issues to project management issues. I'm still working on my problem solving skills and my procrastination on getting stories and other things done (scripts). I also need to make sure my audio levels are even on the camera before I start filming because in my last story the audio was barely hearable. Along with this, I still could improve a little more on my script writing skills. I have the basics down, but I need to focus more on going deeper and trying to insert casual remarks and improv within my writing.
For this next semester, I'm going to try to focus more on stories and not so much on producing. I love the producing aspect, but I'm trying to lean more towards reporting rather than producing. News Story Reflection 12
I was able to learn a lot of new information such as how commercials work (national and local), the difference between real news and high school anchors, and how a true live production works. It was really reassuring to know that most of what we do now in high school stays the same in the real world and that I won't be completely and utterly lost when I go to a true news station.
Some of the things that I am definitely going to start implementing into my own work is the use of more stand ups, ad-libbing with my co-host when I anchor ONW Now, and to try to put more entertaining and humorous packages into the show along with not being so serious when I anchor.

News Story Reflection 11

This news story was told by a weather reporter actually which wasn't any different from a normal journalist besides the addition of weather at the end. It was about the show Walking with Dinosaurs and how each of the dinosaurs are controlled.
I thought it was really interesting how the reporter ad libbed the whole segment and improvised her responses to the person she was talking to on the spot. She obviously had a set amount of time and an outline of script, but she ultimately had to report off the top of her head which shows just how good a true reporter is.
If I were to have been the reporter in this situation, I would've tried to get an interview with the people up at the top that're controlling the movements and actions of the dinosaur instead of just the person in charge of driving the dinosaur itself. I also would've possibly gotten footage from the actual show rather than solely the behind the scenes.
This Friday I'm hoping to possibly gain a mentor and internship at Fox 4 along with an idea of how the real world of broadcast journalism works. If the reporters have any tips on how to be a good journalist that will also be amazing to learn. I'm extremely excited for this opportunity.

News Story Reflection 10
This week I am doing my blog on an episode of Glee. Ainsley, Lina, and I watched an episode of Glee one day in class and learned quite a bit actually. There are many different aspects of tv shows that can be incorporated into news stories such as different shots, zooms, and how to use J and L edits.
Glee tends to use a lot of zooms in their footage to enforce certain situations within the show. I actually used a zoom in my recent story to try to put emphasis on a stand up location. I also used many different J and L edits to make the broll and interviews more fluid within the package like used in the show.
Some things they could do better are to make the shots more steady and not so shaky. The movements are also really sharp which make it kind of hard to keep track of the story line sometimes. If I were to film for the show I would make sure the shots are a little more steady and make the broll flow together better.

This news story was one that we had to look at for our quiz. It was about a bird that had somehow crashed into a plane while in the air then got stuck. Luckily the plane was able to land safely with the bird still stuck and there were no injuries except for the bird itself.
The reporter did a good job of getting interviews with the pilot and with passengers of the plane as well. They also got as much broll as possible considering the limited amount of time and information and possible footage they could get.
Some things they could've done better would be that they could've gotten more footage and tried to get more background information on certain types of birds or previous bird crash accidents that've happened in the past.

News Story Reflection 8

In this news story, the tragic mass killing in New York was covered. There were many videos used from news stations but also bystanders who filmed the incident. There were also many different interviews from people who witnessed the horrible event and parents of children who were on lockdown in school during the event. This story was done very well and the variety of interviews and shots added to the intensity of the event.
Some of the things done well in this story were that the reporter got interviews with people you wouldn't generally think would be interviewed in this type of story such as children walking the streets during the incident and also a woman who's child was in school and put on lockdown once the killing rampage occurred. I also appreciated that the reporter used videos that they themselves filmed but also videos from people who witnessed the scene.
If I were to have done anything different with this package I probably would've tried to get an interview with an NYPD member or a detective that was at the scene after the incident occurred. I might've also tried to get a little more footage of the actual rampage itself or of the person who committed the act.
I've been a leader in class this week because I finished a feature story with Roan in 2 days and then also helped Lina produce her first Raven Minute. I also produced and anchored another Raven Minute on my own in one day.

News Story Reflection 7

This news package was about the sex allegations made towards famous producer Harvey Weinstein. It went into an interview with famous actress Ashley Judd and Diane Sawyer about Judd's experience with Weinstein. Sawyer did a very good job of making sure there was always gnat noise, that her voice overs matched up, and also gave a variety of pictures and videos. The way that her voice overs perfectly summed up and lead into the next sound bytes flowed very well.
If there were anything I would change, I would possibly try to get more than the one interview with Judd and try to find at least one more of the supposed 60 women who claimed they had been sexually assaulted as well. However, overall I believe this story was done very well and kept me intrigued the whole 8 minutes.
I'm going to make sure that when I do stories that I have many different shots or pictures, multiple interviews, and keep the gnat noise going. Also, I am going to try to use the sound bytes of the subject to base my voice overs and lead ins off of.

While the reporter never talked and used text instead, they still did a very good job of relaying the message that was necessary for the package to be successful. There were many different interviews which was very good and made the story really impactful. There were also many different shots instead of the video being repetitive.
The only thing I think the reporter could've done to make this story the best it could be is that they could've done a stand up in one of the effected areas or any voice overs at all.

News Story Reflection 6

The news story in this segment was about a woman who's heart stopped in the middle of her sisters wedding. She was walking down the isle as the maid of honor when all of a sudden she collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital unexpectedly.
While this story is not an actual package and is mostly an interview, I think the reporter did a very good job about making the subjects feel comfortable and keeping the conversation going. They didn't just ask yes or no questions, instead she asked questions that could be answered in detail. The communication between the anchor and the subjects was done very well and they kept the conversation going the whole time.
If I were to do something different with this story, I would've tried to find actual footage from the wedding instead of just using pictures. The collaboration between the anchor and the videographer was not as good as it could've been. I liked how they had a variety of different pictures thought so it wasn't repetitive.
To make sure I've used my time effectively this week, I have been checking in to see if there's ever anything I can do and if there isn't stuff for eComm to do, I would do other class work to ensure that I am up to date on all my work.

News Story Reflection 5

This past weekend, there was a large mass shooting in Las Vegas during a Jason Aldean concert killing 50 and injuring over 400. The shooter was identified as Stephen Paddock from Mesquite, Nevada. He was on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel with at least 8 weapons consisting of rifles and more.
This story was mostly of a stand up but it was done very well both technically and reporting wise. They got both the reporter and the subject in the shot but closed in on the subject when he was giving his answers. The reporter did a nice job of talking to the subject himself rather than looking into the camera. Also, they had shots of live footage from the scene playing on the side which was nice so it wasn't just two people talking.
What I would've done differently in this story was I probably would've tried to go a little more in depth of the scene and what the subject was feeling rather than just having him describe what Jason Aldean was doing. The reporter could've done that by communicating to the subject before the interview and let them know what exactly they wanted to come out of the interview.

Throughout the package, it has the anchor talking with pictures and videos of the players during the National Anthem. Then, it was Jones' Press Secretary trying to clarify that they weren't doing it in spite of Trump, they were just banding together as a team and a family.

One thing that the reporter did well was that they got more than one interview: one with a victim/bystander and one with a family member. They had very detailed answers that connected back to the reporters' story. Their voice overs matched up with the soundbytes of the interviews very well.
Something they could've done better was that they could've gotten a larger variety of shots. While they weren't there at the actual scene and couldn't get footage of the incident at the actual moment it happened, they could've tried to go into the school and get footage of the halls or talk to teachers, etc.

Junior Year Final Reflection
This year has been filled with lots of learning, trial and error, and experience. I have been taught so many things that I will be able to use constantly throughout the rest of my career in the Broadcast field. I am definitely going to use the things I've learned and the things I have struggled with into consideration for how to handle the years to come.
In the Technical aspect of the eCommunication guarantees, I have inherited many tips and new skills that will definitely be useful for the future. I have learned how to create lower thirds in After Effects then how to import them into a clip. Also, I have been able to understand and control the sound during a show.
Collaboration and communication came hand in hand this year when I had to be able to work with everyone in the class at once. Being able to communicate effectively with the rest of your team in order to ensure all stories were done was a major key to a successful show. While there were some issues throughout the year with people not doing their stories, I always had my story done on time no matter when it was assigned to me. For example, there was a story assigned to a partner and I recently where we had to get an interview with someone all the way from a nursing home, do another interview at the school, get voiceovers and lower thirds, then put it all together in one day. By effectively planning and communicating about how we wanted to assess the situation, we were able to finish the story within a 20 minute time frame.
Project management goes along with the example above as well in that being able to handle a short time frame story requires lots of thinking about how you're going to get it all done in time. Especially taking into consideration the interviews, finding b-roll, writing out voiceovers, then putting it all together. There were points in which I could've improved my project management or time management in general, specifically if I didn't have an actual story to do.
I don't think I took any particular leadership this year, especially considering I was only a junior. However, I am hoping to become a positive role model for the upcoming juniors next year and to be able to help them in becoming better journalists/videographers/hosts/etc. I hope to leave an impact on them considering the seniors this year didn't converse much with the juniors (besides Gabel, Val, and Luke whom I am so thankful for).
I think this year as brought out my many strengths and weaknesses that will help me in the year to come. I am generally good at getting my stories done on time and done well. However, I didn't always take story opportunities nor was I always as productive as I could've been during class time.
If I were to change anything in the class, I would have a little more structure, discipline, and no class discrimination. The seniors and juniors didn't bond very much which kind of made it hard for us to learn from them and make it easy to ask for help. Also, if discipline is introduced at the beginning of the year, then people wouldn't leave early on a daily basis *cough cough* seniors *cough cough*. The structure could help with assigning stories/jobs for productions/make production meetings more efficient and productive.
However, overall I am so grateful for this year and am looking forward to finishing out my final year at ONW strong in the Convergence program.
In the Technical aspect of the eCommunication guarantees, I have inherited many tips and new skills that will definitely be useful for the future. I have learned how to create lower thirds in After Effects then how to import them into a clip. Also, I have been able to understand and control the sound during a show.
Collaboration and communication came hand in hand this year when I had to be able to work with everyone in the class at once. Being able to communicate effectively with the rest of your team in order to ensure all stories were done was a major key to a successful show. While there were some issues throughout the year with people not doing their stories, I always had my story done on time no matter when it was assigned to me. For example, there was a story assigned to a partner and I recently where we had to get an interview with someone all the way from a nursing home, do another interview at the school, get voiceovers and lower thirds, then put it all together in one day. By effectively planning and communicating about how we wanted to assess the situation, we were able to finish the story within a 20 minute time frame.
Project management goes along with the example above as well in that being able to handle a short time frame story requires lots of thinking about how you're going to get it all done in time. Especially taking into consideration the interviews, finding b-roll, writing out voiceovers, then putting it all together. There were points in which I could've improved my project management or time management in general, specifically if I didn't have an actual story to do.

Personal Project Review-Health Expo
This was a video about the ONW Health Expo held by the P.E. Department with help from the Foods Department. During this event, students enrolled in any weights, physical education, or team activities class had the privilege of learning how make healthy decisions throughout life. I chose this video because I personally believe this was one of my better videos (done with Gabby Thomas as well) out of the ones I've done this semester.
At the beginning of this project, Gabby and I created questions for our interviewees to answer that would help us create our story. During actual filming we had 50 minutes to film B-Roll and get interviews which was a little stressful but worked out alright in the end. Our plan for getting B-Roll was just to make sure we got plenty of variety with wide, close-up, and medium shots. We also wanted to be sure that all shots we used were interesting and that something was always happening within those shots so the viewers wouldn't get bored.
While this video was one of our better ones footage wise, I believe the set up of the actual video could've been put together better. During our first interview, it went from interview to B-Roll then back to interview and on and on. I would've liked to have made the B-Roll shots longer and same with the interview so it wouldn't have seemed so repetitive. Also, because I'm so short, it's hard to get the person we're interviewing on eye level, especially when you're in the moment. In the future I will make sure to have them be in the correct Rule of Thirds and also at eye level with the camera so it doesn't look as though they are looking down on the camera.
Overall however, I am very proud of this video and all the videos that I have done (with Gabby on some) and am looking forward to seeing what I can accomplish next semester in Convergence.
Professional Article Review-Grease Live!
The author of this article believed that the show was slow at the beginning but quickened in pace and got "better and better as it went along". They gave credibility to the director of the live performance saying that he was able to keep the show interesting yet true to the original. They also pin pointed specific scenes and songs within the musical such as "Freddy My Love", and "Greased Lightning". I believe this writer did a good job of incorporating specific examples and talking about almost all the characters/actors individually giving each one their deserved spotlight.
While the article addressed the negatives of the show, it never truly offered a solution for them or gave specific reasoning as to why those certain incidents weren't ideal. However, the overall composition of this article was very well put together and the author did a very good job at convincing the reader to agree with them and also including specifics about Grease Live!

Professional Project Review- ABC News
This news story was over a girl named Savannah Fulkerson who lives with Erythropoietic Porphyria- a disease which causes her skin to burn when exposed to the sun. Whenever she goes into the sunlight, a pain comes over her that is so unbearable that it brings tears to her eyes. Ever since she was 4 years old, this medical mystery has taken over Savannah's life. Abbie Boudreau from ABC news goes inside to see what it's like to live a life without sunlight.
Throughout this news package there were interviews, home footage, and present day b-roll. They did interviews with 3 different people which gave a lot of different perspectives such as Savannah, her mother, and a professional dermatologist. It helped to tell Savannah's story from different point of views and also informed people more about her illness and what the symptoms and effects are.
While there are many things that went well in this package, there were also some things that could've been improved. I would've liked to see more insight of what actually happens on the inside of someone's body when they have this illness. Also, it would've been interesting to see what hobbies Savannah enjoys/is able to do even with her illness. Overall, however, I believe this news package was a well put together and thorough story.
